Halfpenny february update.

Post by Halfpenny »

It’s been a bit of a slog this month so far. We’ve had snow that then turned into ice. Our yard and pathways to animal housing became compacted and turned into treacherous ice rinks! Our outdoor water supply also froze, so much of my time has involved filling 20 litre water containers and carrying them around to ensure the animals had plenty. It was so cold some days, the chicken water was starting to freeze within the hour of getting fresh and we had to take in one cockerel, who has large wattles, ear pieces and a huge comb because he was starting to get frostbite. In the midst of this we took in another rabbit, but we are now completely full, he was bought off gumtree but the owner’s child was allergic. He’s a beautiful blue Dutch ( I have a soft spot for duchies and dwarf lops) we have called Horton. No idea if he’s been vaccinated, not neutered and had weepy eyes. He was on sawdust and I wonder if that was the cause because they have cleared up here. Thankfully the frost is now on the move, we had high winds and heavy rain yesterday that really moved the ice and this will allow our volunteers back, we had to cancel most of them for health and safety reasons. I can now focus on getting neutering and Tribble’s dental done, and just hope the weather settles for a while to let me catch up!

Goodness what problems you have had with the snow and ice, but glad to hear its melting now. It must have been particularly difficult for you having to manage without your volunteers too but glad you coped.
I hope Horton the new blue dutch bunny settles in well- (I wonder if the sawdust was the cause of the owners allergy rather than Horton himself?)- glad to hear his eye is clearing now.
Hope Tribble's dental goes ok. :)
