Pet Plan insurance for elderly rabbits

Had my renewal through for Peter who is my oldest rabbit, he will be 9 this year, and everything has gone up again!!

The premium for the year is a whopping £226.58 (a monthly DD of £18.88) for 1 bunny! (This includes the multipet discount) The excess has gone up again from £100 to £105.00, plus I also have to pay the 1st 20% of each claim after the excess has been deducted. I notice the maximum amount on veterinary fees £2000.00 stays the same it has always been this amount and has never been increased, I went over this amount on Caspers insurance last year

Not sure whether to cancel the insurance now or continue for another year. If I put in a claim for £150.00 vet fees I will only get back £36 for £200 claim £76.00

I did make 1 claim last year for him as he had a small ulcer on one of his eyes with the vet visits (2 or 3) and medication I only got £20 back!

I made it the maximum you can get back per year for 1 condition would be £1289.42 (from the £2000 take of the £105 excess, then take off 20%, then take off the annual premium paid) that's a lot of money for Petplan!

I have also been thinking about this recently, but it is tricky as my Herbie has a few issues, and I don't think that a new insurer would insure him at all. At least they let you do continuation claims.

How old is Herbie? if he's young enough you could probably get him insured but if he has health issues already, they will probably put in some exclusions to his policy. This happened to me with one of my bunnies several years ago, when I got him he had an eye infection and so when I got him insured they put in an exclusion so I wasn't able to claim for eye related vets fees, but I did put in lots of claims for other vets fees and they paid up

I'm glad you said this, I just checked and mine has gone up as well. If I hadn't seen that I wouldn't have put enough money in my account to cover it.

Herbie will be 9 this year I think, I have had him for 6.5 years and I think he was about 2 when I got him, so he is getting on.

I didn't insure Alfred, and to be honest it was swings and round abouts when I look at the insurance premiums v what I paid out for vets fees.

II keep debating every year what to do about Apache's insurance, but leave it in place... His is now £45 per month (£500 excess and not even tack insured), and he's only got another 3 years of eligibility for vets fees.. I have left it in place as the costs spiral incredibly quickly for horses..

The reason I got mine insured was because I was hit hard by Oren's illness and the Rescue ended up paying £600 for his fees on my behalf! Pandora and Mattie (who I adopted to be Pandora's new partner) were both insured so that wouldn't happen again.

It's a difficult one- if you can afford to put a bit of money into a savings account ( or even a jamjar) as well as the insurance fees you would reach a point where you could pay for vet fees from the pot and cancel the insurance, but I guess you need to do that before they get too old or you won't have time to build up a vet fees pot. Also it would be hard to be paying extra each month.

I don't think it works like that. I'm pretty sure that you can get back £2000 say if the overall bill came to £2500 (or whatever it would need to reach to get maxed out!). There is £2k there to be claimed they don't knock it off from the 20% and other excesses.... that's my understanding anyway but I hope I don't have to test it out anytime soon!

Erin's (age 8) renewal came through recently and it had only gone up about £10 which was a huge relief.... but it's still twice what I pay for Dinky with Pets at Home insurance.

I don't think Pet Plan will insure him due to the age I'm sure there is an age limit but I can't remember what it is I'm sure its either 5 or 7, although they do offer covered for life policies for rabbits but you have to take out the insurance before they reach the age limit (5 or 7)
