How to give an injection - with video

Post by Hunnybunny2007 »

I've made a very short video of how to give an injection to a rabbit.

This is Harry, who has to be injected with depocillin 3 times a week as part of his treatment for an abscess.

My vet provides the syringes ready loaded with depocillin, however, I find that sometimes the needles can become blocked, if this happens I separate the syringe and dip the needle section into fairly hot water for a few seconds, this should clear any blockages.

Reconnected, you can see there is a slight leakage of medicine on the needle

When injecting a rabbit, carefully tent the fur and skin on the top part of the back, if the rabbit is tense this can be more difficult, next gently insert the needle into the flesh, you should feel a little resistance before it enters, I find twisting the syringe as I do this can sometimes help, once you are sure the needle is inserted, squeeze the plunger into the syringe until it's empty, give the bunny a little treat and lots of praise :)

If any of the medicine should leak onto the fur, wipe away immediately with damp cotton pads, to ensure the rabbit can't digest it.
