Any tips for getting them through this?
Mooskit is being spayed on Friday, and the two (! I thought one was a girl!) boys are being castrated next Tuesday. Vet is a specialist exotic vet at Langford Vet School. All 3 need to go along with each other on both days so they aren't separated except for the actual surgery. They said keep feeding as usual and take their favourite foods to tempt them after they come round. Other than that they didn't say anything. Is it all quite straightforward? I've had a very bad experience losing a rabbit at a vets, and it's a bit (lot) nerve wracking. Mooskit is still very jumpy and nervous, but I'm running out of time before she starts having babies so it needs to be done.
My main concern is keeping Mooskit post-spay in with the two boys who won't have had an op just yet. At the moment at night they have a 6'x4' pen in the kitchen, the whole area is filled with hay, should I get that up and put down towels/vet bed temporarily?

Re: Spaying/neutering help
A good vet will give you a post-operative care sheet.
However it's better to be prepared before you go to collect them!
.As I recal, the vets usually say no hay or straw other than in a hay rack (or similar) because they don't want bits of hay getting stuck in the wound. I fed mine handfuls of hay at regular intervals in a deep food bowl, as there wasn't room for a hay rack in the dog crate, though I have only ever had one bunny neutered at a time.. Strands of hay will get on the towels but don't get stressed about it .So yes lots of towels, a thick newspaper in the litter tray (with a towel on top if you like? )snugglesafes and in a normally heated room. They usually say rabbits must be kept indoors for a least 24hrs after an op and 48hrs for vunerable ( like elderly) rabbits).
I'm sorry I didn't spot your post as I wasn't on here last night but most spays are routine. Definitely keep feeding up to the op and tempt with treats afterwards. You may have to hand-feed strands of parsley etc to start her eating again.
I don't know if Mooskit should be kept in a pen post-spay with 2 un-neutered boys? You will have to go by your vet's advice on that. They do usually say to keep bonded pairs together and I have had 2 females break a bond because one went in for spay alone.
I would watch them very carefully to make sure neither of the boys mounts her if you do. You could spend the night on a sunlounger or sofa so you would instantly hear if any noises.
I do hope everything goes well for Mooskit today.

I think SDF76 has covered most things in her reply to you
Just to add, I use vet bed when they've had surgery, you also need to check that Mooskit doesn't try to take the stitches out herself, I've only had one rabbit do this, but it's always best to be prepared
As long as they are eating, drinking and pooing they should be okay, if not then you should contact the vet for more advice, the vet should also have given pain relief after the operation, so you may have to give more tomorrow, most vets also like to do a post op check a day or so after the operation

Re: Post op spay advice needed -op today
Thanks everyone.
The op isn't until tomorrow (Friday) - for some reason the thread title has changed, not sure how that happened!
There hasn't been any mounting or shenanigans up to now, but I'll stay with them and keep a close eye just in case.
They're in the kitchen anyway which is nice and warm from the stove being on all the time.
Would it be a good idea to put some Bio Lapis in their water post op?

Re: Post op spay advice needed -op today
My vet has given me bio lapis when on Abx (but Alfred wouldn't touch it!) I ave 2 bowls, one plain and one with bio lapis.
I've also used this in the past, when he won't drink (he has gone days without drinking post op - he has plenty of veg to keep him hydrated)

I do also feed protexin pro fibre daily, as that's got probiotics in (and Alfred likes it!).
Please let us know how Mooskit gets on x

Mooskit's op went well, they were happy she'd eaten and pooed so we've just got home and are keeping a careful eye on her. She's a lot brighter than I thought she'd be. She's in a nice snug vet bed nest, has all her favourite food in there to tempt her and has even got some fenugreek crunchies from her Auntie Apache The two boys are leaving her alone and are busy making a nice mess of the hay
Thanks for all the kind words and advice, I'd been so worried and you were all a great help
Re: Post op spay advice needed -op today
I'm so pleased Mooskit's doing so well, I hope she's back to normal soon, and manages to save a crunchie for the boys too
Re: Post op spay advice needed -op today
I'm so pleased to hear Mooskit's op went well and that the boys aren't bothering her.
