Protecting against infections
Protecting against infections
We have been asked about a cleaning protocol that would prevent rabbits from contracting Myxomatosis or EC from their accommodation, for example in boarding or rescue establishments, and suggest the following:
Thoroughly clean the area to remove any scale or residue
Use Ark-Klens , which is a benzalkonium chloride disinfectant and as such it should be effective against EC and Myxi, to routinely disinfect the housing. Periodically use Virkon (as an inorganic peroxygen compound) to kill any other viruses
Note: Other benzalkonium chloride disinfectants and inorganic peroxygen compounds may be available, in addition to those named above.

Re: Protecting against infections
We always clean out, wipe down then steam clean and virkon our boarding hutches. A reminder though to wear a separate pair of gloves and use a clean cloth for every hutch so any infections that are present are not transferred to the next hutch.

Re: Protecting against infections
I use a steam cleaner on the hutches that haven't been used during the winter, it gives them a good spring clean

Virkon is around £15 and lasts ages is made up correctly. You can get it from SPH Supplies who are a brilliant company and really helpful if there any problems or if you need advice.

I've done a quick internet search and the results pages are here

It'll be worth comparing prices from the various websites, but also to compare postage costs. Some may give an inclusive price, others may separate
