THIS ENTRY IS ON BEHALF OF HOPPER HAVEN

Kiki is a conti doe, born in 2016. She came to us in 2018 after her owner could no longer keep her.
She’s quite a frail girl with heart issues and ongoing eye issues, but she’s a beautiful girl.
She loves a fuss, and loves her fluffy teddy bear husbun Lev. Her favourite pastime is running around the sanctuary seeing the other residents, and scrounging treats from all who cross her path.
She was delighted with the Sectet Santa package as it had her favourite pellets in.

THIS ENTRY IS ON BEHALF OF MARIAS ANIMAL SHELTER

This is Dale. Would you like to put him in for animal of the month.
Dale is a 6 year old male rabbit who has been with us for quite a while now. He has always had tummy troubles but lately they have been much worse. The vet is currently treating him with antibiotics. Dear Dale has always lived alone. It would be so nice if we could get him better and bond him with a friend so he can spend the remainder of his life settled and happy.

Baby Blue Bee Bunnies would like to enter Behemoth.

For those who have followed their journey, Bunzilla & Behemoth are a sibling pair of giant continentals who have been with us for one whole year in rescue while we looked for a forever home for them. We also have their other brother, Bigwig who is also looking for a forever home.

It took us almost a year to find them a forever home, as finding homes for giants of this size is not easy. Sadly, they did not make it there. 💔

Behemoth started to develop mobility issues in his foster home with his front legs. Sadly he had to come back to the rescue. After veterinary investigations were done, he was diagnosed with a severe type of arthritis that is eating him away on the inside due to his size. He is now paralysed and has no front leg mobility, his neck, shoulders and elbows are completely worn away and it is working its way down his spine. He is quite literally, wasting away.

Behemoth is the largest giant we've had at the rescue. What has breeding rabbits of this sheer unnatural size done to him? Caused him to suffer. To be on palliative care at 2 and a half years old is heartbreaking and so unnecessary. Can we STOP creating these ridiculously big rabbits whose hearts and joints cannot cope under the pressure of their weight?? Who live a short life and have nothing but health problems??

What's to be of Behemoth and his sister? We have him on an intense care regime for pain management, with 3 different meds 3 times daily and physiotherapy. They now have a specially adapted set up. He is depressed, and we know he has limited time left. Finding a home for them now seems an impossibility, when we couldn't find them a home when they were 'healthy'. 😞 We have had to accept they may be with us until their last day, as sanctuary buns. Not what we hoped for them at the rescue.

This has been incredibly difficult for us to come to terms with at the rescue. Watching him deteriorate, depressed and unable to enjoy his life the same. They were days away from getting adopted, and now they may never be able to leave. They are our priority and we will not give up on them, no matter what they need. 💙 He will continue to get the best of veterinary care and all the love and attention we can give him.

Last month Beloved Rabbits nominated Jennie for rescue rabbit of the month, who sadly had to be euthanised once the extent of her chronic pain became clear. This month, we would like to nominate her sister Jilly.

Once Jennie had been diagnosed, we became concerned about Jilly despite her having already been to one of our vet partners for a neuter op, and arranged for her to have a check up at the specialist vet that treated Jennie. She had x rays taken, which thankfully showed that she's nowhere near as bad as Jennie was, however there was evidence of issues requiring her to be put on a care plan.

She has poor hip definition, muscle wastage, mild arthritis, and the vet also noticed that her rib cage was fractured, which they believe to be an old injury. It doesn't appear to be causing Jilly any problems, but was very noticeable on the x ray. There was a piece of good news though as when Jilly went in for her spay, the vet removed a large uterine tumour, and these further checks haven't identified any secondary spread of the cancer.

She has been put on a pain plan consisting of Metacam, paracetamol and tramadol, and will go back to the specialist vet for a check up in a few weeks to determine how effective the plan has been. It is likely that she'll need to be on a lifelong pain management plan however as long as she is comfortable and happy we have high hopes that this girl can live a long and happy life.

She is pictured below in her burry burrito for her amazing foster carer to give her meds!

THIS ENTRY IS ON BEHALF OF WINDWHISTLE WARREN (entry was received before the deadline of midnight on 31.12.22, but I was unable to post yesterday evening)

Timmy came in as a ‘doe’, whose sister had died the day before from flystrike. Timmy also had flystrike, luckily we managed to get him to the vets early enough.
He went for neutering, which is when it was discovered he was a neutered buck. But, he had some dental work done, so all was not in vain.
The vet does not think he is very healthy. So, we had bloods done etc, and nothing was discovered. Timmy is such a happy and confident rabbit, he is determined to enjoy his life.

Thank you so much for selecting Jilly for Rabbit of the month.

She is adjusting to her pain plan really well, and we are hoping to see a marked improvement at her next check-up due in a couple of weeks time. Here's hoping she has made enough of an improvement for us to be able to finalise her care management and start looking for a suitable home for her.
