THIS ENTRY IS ON BEHALF OF MARIAS ANIMAL SHELTER

As if we haven't got enough going on at the shelter at the moment, we were handed in these 2 beautiful guineas. What a poor state they are in. The white crust you see on the back is fungal that has been left untreated. What you cannot see is the extreme itching and heat that fungal can cause. Both have scratched themselves so much that it causes open sores on their body. Unfortunately this does not stop them scratching and in the end they start to fit because of the pain. We have put tops on the guineas to stop them being able to reach but it is sad to see them so uncomfortable. I really hope they pull through this after the trauma of it all. Second and third photo is after 1 treatment.

THIS ENTRY IS ON BEHALF OF WINDWHISTLE WARREN

Jessica Quaver was abandoned in a cardboard box on a lane in Barry. She had chronic eye discharge which caused them and the skin around them to be extremely sore. Her fur was very matted and dirty. The vet nurse who took her in named her ‘quaver’ as her claws were curled like the snacks.
Jessica is determined to live the best life possible. She is full of sass and mischief 🥰 Someone is going to be a very lucky parent.

This month Beloved Rabbits would like to nominate Jennie. This gorgeous girl was surrendered to us as her owner no longer had the time to care for her and shortly after entry to the rescue, we noticed she had a very unusual gait and didn't move around much. She also had mild sore hocks and seemed to feel the cold a lot more than a usual outdoor bunny, spending a lot of time snuggled up on her heat pad in her straw den.

Due to this, we suspected she was in pain and got her booked in for an assessment urgently. At her appointment, the vet confirmed our thoughts - she advised that Jennie was in chronic pain due to muscle wastage in her back legs, and having no strength to move normally meant she had developed her own workarounds to compensate, which unfortunately led to her also having callouses and sore hocks.

Her foster carer was sent home with an array of medicines to give her to see if we could get her comfortable, and yesterday she was taken back to the vet for X rays to establish what was going on in her body. Devastatingly, they showed an issue with every limb, from a bowed front leg due to vitamin D deficiency in her bones to a floating knee cap. It was so bad that even under sedation she was able to feel pain from the vet manipulating her legs and this was making her wake up.

We sadly had to make the kindest decision to put her to sleep and end her suffering. This always hits the team hard but we are thankful that due to the quick action of her foster carer her last days were comfortable and she doesn't have to be in pain any longer.
