Baby Blue Bee Bunnies would like to enter the Lost soul group who arrived very unexpectedly last week.

Late at night on the 22nd June, someone horrifically dumped 14 rabbits in a field in Dalmellington. The person who owned the land became aware and raced against the clock to catch each of the rabbits which they luckily managed to do and then held them all together in a field shelter until a rescue could help.

We were contacted and asked whether we could help. Sadly like all rescues, we are full and we have no resources both space and financial to take these rabbits in. However we knew their fate otherwise was death.

We went out the following day to assess the situation and see what we were dealing with. When we arrived we could see the remaining 10 rabbits were in poor condition and there was also one litter of babies along with a mother. The lady who had rescued them had already rehomed 4 to try and help alleviate the situation.

The babies were completely emaciated and covered in their own urine and faeces. Injuries had already occurred from fighting between themselves and there were serious wounds.
We knew this situation was critical and the rabbits could not be left in the field shelter together any longer as they did not even have access to water.

We took the 10 rabbits back to the rescue into holding pens so they could be properly assessed and receive veterinary treatment as soon as possible.
They are now receiving the veterinary care, antibiotics for their wounds etc that they need and very much needed love and attention.

We are currently doing everything we can to settle and improve the situation of these Little Lost Souls of Dalmellington.

THIS ENTRY IS ON BEHALF OF MARIAS ANIMAL SHELTER

Marias Animal Shelter would like to enter Pepper. This is Pepper she was signed over to us a couple of weeks ago, with 2 male rabbits. They were all kept seperate. Pepper was 12 years old and kept in a hutch all her life. The daughter (who's rabbit they were)of the family moved away, and left the bunnies behind. The mum informed us that the hutches were rotting and that her 2 dogs were trying to get to the rabbit. Pepper came in quite skinny, but her breathing was not right, and she looked in pain. The vet took an x-ray that revealed a large tumour in her abdomen, so dear Pepper had to be put to sleep before we could give her a little happiness in her life. To me, this is the worst side of rescue.

THIS ENTRY IS ON BEHALF OF THE RABBIT RESIDENCE RESCUE

The Rabbit Residence Rescue would like to enter Hemmingway.
Hemmingway was part of a large group of un-neutered rabbits rescued from awful conditions, where they lived in cramped accommodation and were forced to fight for limited resources. As a result of this Hemmingway had multiple abscessed bite wounds, & hind limb weakness, muscle wastage, he is the sweetest rabbit & despite everything he has been through he adores a head rub & human attention.

This month Beloved Rabbits would like to nominate Honeydew and Melon for rescue rabbit of July. This mum and daughter pair were surrendered to us after their owner contacted us and advised that health issues meant they were unable to care for the rabbits adequately, and although it was a difficult decision they wanted the bunnies to have a better life.

Honeydew (mum) is just one year old herself and when she entered the rescue we knew she was in critical condition as she was so skinny, constantly wet underneath and very lethargic. Despite this somehow baby Melon was bright and healthy. They were placed in foster and urgently booked in to see the vet, where it was found that Honeydew had a dangerously low heartbeat (suspected due to malnourishment), an ear infection and also a urine infection. The poor girl must have been feeling horrendous having to deal with all that while also nursing Melon, but she was immediately given a course of antibiotics, pain relief and supportive feeding to help her recover.

She started putting weight on right away, and although it was touch and go for a while, we're so grateful that since then she's come on leaps and bounds - her regular vet check ups have confirmed her weight has steadily increased and her heart rate is out of the danger zone. She's still on meds, which she takes like a dream, and both supportive feeds and extra nuggets to help weight gain, and once she's back at a healthy weight we'll be able to see if there are any other issues stemming from her previous conditions.

Her foster carer has also reported that she's really settled in and started to be a 'real' rabbit, and enjoys running around on the grass, flopping and even binkying now! She is super friendly and interactive, and always hops over for a nose rub when she gets the chance. She loves when her foster family spends time in her enclosure so she can climb up onto their knee! Baby Melon has also continued to do well and although she too is happy to accept pets, you'll most often find her scampering about doing zoomies!

The Pledge a Pound Team have chosen the winner of the Rescue Rabbit (no guinea pig entries this month) of the month and it's Pepper from Marias Animal Shelter. It was an extremely hard decision this month with all the entries having such sad stories.
