We are now opening up this thread for entries for the February Rescue Rabbit/Guinea Pig of the Month.

All our Rescues are welcome to enter, even if you have won before. Your entry must include the animal/s story and at least 1 photo (but more is good ), you have until midnight on 31st January to get your entries in here. Entries can only be accepted from the Rescues/Sanctuaries that Pledge a Pound supports, and must be placed as a reply to this thread.

Only one entry per Rescue please.

Your entry can be a single rabbit or guinea pig, or it can be a pair or group that live together.

The winner will be chosen by the Pledge a Pound Team at the beginning of February.

The winner will receive a prize of items to be sent to the Rescue such as Panacur, Fibreplex, critical care, etc and similar things that all rabbit/guinea pig Rescues use/need. The prize for February will be 2 sachets of recovery food, 1 tube of Panacur and 1 packet of Burns Meadow Mix.

Poor Crystal has had a poor start in life. Her friend was killed by a ferret, who also caught Crystal. She was left with a nasty infection because she was not given vet treatment straight away. Crystal is being treated for a fungal infection near her eye. Crystal has nearly healed, as you can see in the photos. She has such a strong character, which is how we think she survived such an ordeal.

[Southampton Rescue]

Southampton Rabbit Rescue qould like to add Sir Eddy in pet of the month. Eddy is our mascot and has spent the past wwwk at the vets undergoing treatment for bladder sludge/stones. We find out next week if he is ro.undergo major bladder surgery.

Baby Blue Bee Bunnies would like to nominate the Sporty Babies. This little litter of sporty gorgeous boys and girls arrived at the rescue and we had high hopes that they would be happy healthy bunnies.

The big blow we received came from our exotic vet teams evaluations of the Sporty Babies and the diagnosis of all of them having genetic dental malaclusion. Talk about a knock to the floor! As they have been growing and developing, so have their teeth. Malaclusion is where the jaw doesn't line up properly and typically affect the incisors not wearing down. This is a genetic condition caused by two recessive genes being passed down. This is usually identified at around 12-16 weeks old. The Sporties are 12 weeks old and very developed for their age.

This is another reason it is so important not to sell/adopt babies out at 8 weeks old. At 8 weeks, their teeth looked fine as they were tiny and there were no visible signs yet of malaclusion.

The babies are now being booked for surgery to neuter them and have their incisors removed. We are going to document this process on our members page as an educational resource as well as a series about caring for "gummy buns" as we will have lots of gummies to find homes for!

This surgery is going to set us back thousands of pounds, we are absolutely dreading the vet bills for the extractions plus neuters for the 6 of them.

This month Beloved Rabbits would like to nominate Lewis Capaldi for rescue rabbit of the month, who we mentioned in our December update. Lewis has been with us now for a year due to a few setbacks including a failed bond and, recently, his adoption having to be put off due to health concerns over his eye.

After the issue with his eye was identified by his foster carer, a course of intensive treatment was prescribed but unfortunately it showed no signs of improvement, and it was determined that removing the eye was the best option to stop the inflammation/pressure which would be causing him pain. We are delighted and relieved that the op was a success, and Lewis is recovering well and feeling much happier! He's now available for adoption again and we hope that third time is the charm for this gorgeous wee man and he soon hops off to his forever home.
