Yesterday we said goodbye to our gorgeous Kanga, he loved to run, enjoyed demonstrating his love for wifebun, Erica when we had visitors and he always made us smile.

Kanga spent his life with us and although we loved him and gave him the best we could he never had a forever home of his own and that breaks my heart

We would like to nominate the group of 14 bunnies we rescued from a flat balcony who were left to their own devises and breeding - we named them the balcony buns. Bia, the mother was in a sorry state when she arrived.

At 6 months old she had 5 litters (1 was sold to p@h by the owner and the other 4 we took in), she then gave birth to a further 6 still born kits when she came to us which was very distressing for her. Due to her living with her kits in amongst other un neutered rabbits, she had been repeatedly attacked and had wounds and holes in her ear and all over her body and infected abscesses. She was extremely thin, malnourished, covered in mites and was self mutilating as well.

The adult male, Bulb had such severe dental mallaclusion and had to have the procedure to remove his front incisors (and was castrated at the same time), he is now thriving after having this done and has also been reserved to go to his forever home.

Amongst the many babies, we also had one poor sorry little tiny baby who was extremely thin, mangy and malnourished. His dental mallaclusion was so bad, with not one single tooth in his mouth lining up. We were advised by the exotic vet specialists to have him pts straight away. We didn't, and after consulting with another of the vets he suggested we try and hand rear him for a few weeks and see if we can bulk him up enough to put him under GA. So for 4 weeks we spent 24/7 with him, hand rearing him as he couldn't eat anything at all on his own. He was getting fed round the clock but with no improvement. He was in such pain and discomfort. The vets then tried to burr his front teeth down slightly whilst awake to give him some comfort as the teeth were growing up into his nose, the teeth just broke off as they were so small. Within two weeks they had grown back even worse. All of us at BBBB, all of the team, volunteers and visitors had grown very attached to him and we all had such high hopes for him. We imagined he would have to stay as a sanctuary bun so despite being told not to..... We named him Brave. After 4 weeks of no improvement and he wouldn't get above 400g in weight, we took him for another vet assessment. Sadly things had gotten worse in his mouth and he had abscesses and ulcers from the back molars growing out the side of his cheeks. There wasn't anything they could do, as he was far too scrawny to risk a GA, and even if we could he would be in and have to have every tooth removed which is no life for a bunny. As a baby, all he had known was pain and suffering. Sadly we had to say goodbye to him and it was a sad and difficult week for us all.

The rest of the babies are all doing well and thriving and having their teeth checked every week for any signs of spurs. Luckily they are all greedy for hay and munch non stop. The 4 oldest kits are now in foster care and the 2 oldest have already been neutered and are reserved for their forever home. The next two will be neutered in 2 weeks time as will the mother finally be spayed once the youngest kits stop feeding from her. She has come such a long way and her fur has grown back beautifully, she no longer has mites and she is healing. She has the most beautiful, gentle and submissive nature.

This was the largest amount of buns we have ever taken in as a rescue at once, so we are so greatful for all the support and help we have received from people. As you can all imagine, we have been fundraising hard towards all the treatment although most of it we will have to cover ourselves due to the high expense, which is to be expected.

We see a lovely future for all these buns and despite their sad start, we know that they will now be loved for the rest of their little lives. ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

This beautiful girl is Daffy. Daffy was rescued by a family who realised a few weeks later that Daffy was not suited to a family life. She did not like children or all the noises associated with children. The family could not keep her outside either. One day after coming into us, we took her for a routine spay and teeth check. The vet found that she had late stage uterine cancer and she had to be put to sleep. :(

Adele has now been at Windwhistle for a while. We don't know her history as she was a stray found in a car park. She was very feisty, so she may have been let out, as she was a handful. Her neuter and vaccinations went well, but, we noticed her poos were not normal. They were tested for coccidiosis, but nothing showed up. Also, she started to urinate when she wet herself. She is on metronidazole and panacur. We are not seeing a lot of difference. She is such a beautiful bun and a lively soul but something is not right. We have our fingers crossed that as she is a strong character that she will be strong enough in body to fit this.

We would like to enter Flash. He was taken into a local vets over 3 years ago to be pts as his family were emigrating and nobody wanted him, as he was old and didn't have long left. He was 11 1/2. This was on a Monday and the family were leaving for Hong Kong on the Friday. They had tried everyone RSPCA, pdsa and they said they would just put him to sleep due to his age. Friends and family wouldn't have him either. Last resort 'PTS! Luckily the vet knew me and rang and asked if we would have him... 3 years on he is still here. He was poorly on Good Friday after a visit to the vets for an eye ulcer. I thought we were going to lose him...amazingly he pulled through. Flash was 15 on the 10th March 2019!!
