Halfpenny update

Post by Halfpenny »

Sorry for a very late update, time flies when busy over the summer. We are sadly turning away numerous requests to take rabbits and guinea pigs and most every other animal we get asked to take. Sadly I think this is just the start of animals being given up due to lack of interest over covid and the financial issues with the recent price increases. We are having to be very selective as to what we do take in, when we have space due to the cost of living.
We are taking in 4 ferrets who were dumped in a field, hopefully temporarily, until we find another place for them. Unfortunately they are 3 females and 1 make together, so there could potentially be another, up to approx 21 babies on the way.
We are in the process of changing our heaters/ air conditioner to air source heat pumps which will be more efficient and better controlled than the plug in system we have at the moment, it should be more economical too.
We are now taking back on volunteers, which will be great, not had anybody new since the start of covid, with covid, bird flu and the storms it’s taken a real toll on our ability to take on new volunteers but hopefully we can start it more forward with the new staff helping. I had hoped to stop working but have ended up staying on at the vet, working 5 mornings a week, to keep pennies coming in to help with the bills.
