Nibbles Rodent & Rabbit 2022 updates

Post by Nibbles Rescue »

Janurary

Its been a tough month (i know i know, it always is but) we have faced the huge challenge of needing to find a huge increase and steady income every month as the Welsh Gov has decided to change rule regarding apprenticeships. It's left us in an awkward position of needing to decide what part of the rescue may need to close to ensure we can continue to keep the best level of care for the animals which are with us if we don't manage to increase our funding.
We'll update on this as we get the answers.

Other than that its been another slow month of adoptions although we were very pleased to see one of our eldest residents head off to his furever home, just the boost we needed! And we have a rabbit off on trail bonding currently which is another good bit of news!

One of our most unwell Rabbits (dante) had gone to foster which means he gets far more one on one, and it takes the pressure off the rescue needing to take him to several vet visits and we are hopeful that his eye may be saved but time will tell.

Thank you for your continued support, it means so much to the rescue.

See you next month for another update!

February update!

We have been incredibly busy yet again, does it ever calm down anymore?
Luckily things seem to be looking up on the adoptions front, the Lovely Coco not only got adopted but bonded to her husbun in only a few days which was the pick me up we really needed, especially with the awful weather. We also waved goodbye to 9 Guinea pigs who all headed off to the same home! Hurrah!

Unfortunately we haven't managed to reopen the waiting list due to emergencies coming in as soon as anything leave.

As always thank you to everyone who supports us, it really makes such a difference!

lets hope things are improving, see you next month.

March update

Yet again it's been a slow month for adoptions, there are almost daily requests to take in unwanted rabbits yet there are no homes waiting for the ones already here. It's horrible to have to turn away animals but we are at the point of only being able to take in absolute emergencies. And we did just that this month, we welcomed Ethelred and Ethelstead to the rescue, they were part of an emergency welfare case. The dog warden asked us to take them in and with them being in the dog pound kennels at that point, we just couldn't turn them away.
We also took in Flower, she had been signed over to another rescue and was in a very sorry state, she has require round the clock care. We are hopeful that she will recover but the future is uncertain for her.

We also, as part of our back up for life, had a previous adoption returned to us. This is always an unfortunate situation but one we will always stand by.

In far better news we had a successful fundraiser to purchase more wood to make new pens for the emergency hutches!

As always, thank you everyone for you support in keeping Nibbles running and ensure we are here to take in as many rabbits and rodents as possible!

Hello everyone!

April update! Sorry it's so late, I had trouble logging in.

April unfortunately saw us have no adoptions again which is always a disappointment. We do this to see animals hop off to their lovely furever home.

In other sad news, Flower passed away after trying ever so hard to make it, she left a real mark on the rescue and has pushed us to try and reach owners of animals before they get into the poor health she was in.
We are busy putting together packs for Raw and I will explain more about them next month as they are really exciting!

Thank you as always to everyone who supports Nibbles and every other rabbit rescue, your help has never been needed more.

May update!

Sorry its late again, we have had our apprentice decide not to carry on with their level 3 once they have completed the level 2 so went into panic stations of needing to find another human!

May has been a quiet month in terms of adoptions, we are very lucky that our staff and volunteers are more than willing to take any long term fosters though! With a couple of rats needing long term foster and a chinchilla with severe heart failure also needing somewhere to retire it was a great relief to know they were all heading straight into loving homes.

We have had some rodents arrive this month but with no room for rabbits we have reached a stalemate of nothing coming in or leaving. With almost daily requests to take animals its heart breaking turning them all away but the welfare of the animals already in our care is the priority and that would be put at risk if we took anything more in at this point.

Thank you all for continuing to support nibbles, its needed more now than ever!

June update!

We still haven't had any more rabbit adoptions this year which means we have only adopted one rabbits in half a year! This is such disappointing news, especially with us turning rabbits away almost daily. Our plans for building the new rabbit housing are also on hold due to the horrific weather west wales has been encountering!

We have taken in 2 more female rats today, they are very sweet 1 year old girls who are just bundles of fluffy fun! A real little pick me up for the team was cuddling these girls, especially after having to battle against the weather for the past week or so.

We have also conducted interviews yesterday to hire a new member of staff after our level 2 apprentice has finished, we just need to get the committees approval before we can tell the successful candidate.

Thank you all for your continued support with Nibbles, all the buns would be nose booping you if they could :D

July update

We have made massive progress on our new housing with 6 of the 8 new builds already up and housing rabbits, we are officially completely hutch free now too! This is so important to us as we have such a low adoption rate so rabbits stay with us for quite a while generally.

We have even had one rabbit hop off to a new home - Pebble, who arrived back with us earlier in the year after a change in his adopters circumstances, fingers crossed for an easy bonding and pebble getting his hoppily ever after!

We are still trying to get the final two new builds up whilst also doing the normal rescue jobs, hopefully by the next update we will still be on track. Its a lot of work when making them from scratch!

Thank you to everyone for your support!

Hello all,

We were very sad to say a final goodbye to sanctuary bun Marshall this month. He arrived with us back in 2017 as part of a large welfare case, along with 21 other rabbits. We are so pleased we were able to give Marshall a happy five years with us at Nibbles and he celebrated his 10th birthday in June. We would like to thank everyone who supported Marshall. He will be sorely missed by all at Nibbles, especially his wifebun Seren.

In much happier news we have seen a few animals go off to their furever homes, including Nathan who arrived with us in late 2021. He is now bonded with one of our Sanctuary buns, Alfie, who lives out on permanent foster with Claire. We are utterly delighted that not only has Nathan found a furever home but that Alfie is now a happy hoppy lad with his new friend!

Our new builds are very very almost complete, we have the final 2 pens to construct which we are hoping to achieve in the next 2 weeks (we will definitely be celebrating once the rescue is complete!).

As always a huge thank you to you all for supporting us,

Team Nibbles!

September update

This has been a tough month for us, we have 9 guinea pigs being returned to us. Of course we will always stand by all animals that have been adopted through Nibbles but with our rodent cabin already full we are now in the process of shifting everything around to make new accommodation to fit them in and with staff sickness and prearranged annual leave we've been so tight on time!

We have also had set back after set back with neutering new arrivals, with 4 out of 5 ops cancelled at the very last minute.

In much brighter news though we have welcomed Pippa the French lop who has absolutely stolen the hearts of everyone here, she was purchased in the hopes of bonding her with an existing rabbit in their home but with her not being neutered it failed and she was surrendered to us. She appears to be an ex breeding doe :(

Hopefully next months update will be much brighter!

Thank you to all who support us in one way or another, we are incredibly grateful.

October Update

Apologies for being late once again. We've been really busy catching up with a number of tasks and jobs. It's been a long month of admin admin and more admin. Once again it was a depressing month with no adoption interest, many of our animals have been here well over 12 months now, some coming up to 2 years. I know it's bad for all rescues right now, but it's incredibly depressing to see the buns waiting and waiting. We've had 3 rabbit adoptions this year, just 3!

We are currently starting to prepare for our Christmas auction. With prices rising we are very concerned for our long term future. We are also hoping to organise some events to help promote rabbit welfare and preparing for our events coordinator to take Nibbles on the road to Vegfest.

Catch up next month and hopefully we'll all get a little break over Christmas.

Thank you for your support as always
