Binky Buns - Rabbit and Guinea Pig Rescue updates - 2022

Post by alicesadventures »

Hello everyone

It's all go at Binky Buns and January hasn't even finished yet!

We've had our Christmas stray, Buddy, neutered and he is now looking for a forever home and a special lady bun to call his own.

Our beloved Chairbun Dave had to go to the rainbow bridge as he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and was a very tired elderbun indeed. It was a soft and gentle passing but we broke our hearts over it. We also lost our blind piggy, Jingle, who died unexpectedly in her sleep. Another tragedy!

We were contacted about a situation where breeding had become completely out of control so a couple of weeks ago we took in a mama bun, daddy bun, an 8 week old litter and a 4 week old litter who were all living together in a 4ft guinea pig cage in a brick garage. The owner had sadly got completely overwhelmed and didn't know where to turn. Our friends at Pawz for Thought have kindly helped with the older babies. The younger ones were dehydrated and very frail but, with some extra care, they have all bounced back so well.

Mammy, Phoebe, is missing most of both of her back feet so we are taking veterinary advice about the best way forward for her. We are hoping we will get her back bonded with daddy, Keith, once everyone is neutered. This is the first time Keith has been alone in his life so we want him to have company as soon as possible.

Two piggy boars, Joey and Chandler, have also joined the BB gang. Both have mites so are being treated with Xeno. Joey has bite wounds and Chandler sadly has abdominal tumours and is suffering severe seizures. We are consulting with our vet about whether we will have to let the poor boy go. It is a very difficult decision.

As always, thank you for all your support.

For a short month, February has felt like a extremely long one at Binky Buns!

Keith, the adult male from the out-of-control breeding situation, has been neutered and is now looking for love. He is a truly lovely boy. Joey, the piggy who had been so badly wounded with bites from another boar, has also been castrated and is now reserved to go to his new home. :)

All our baby bunnies have been weaned and are fit and strong and our friends at Pawz for Thought have kindly taken some of them on so we could help some more rabbits in need.

Two separate elderly hutch bunnies have taken up the space that became available. After 8 years in a hutch we are so pleased to have liberated them and given them freedom and choice. Daryl has a serious facial palsy on the left-hand side and Barbara has dental issues and cecal dysbiosis. We are hoping with some TLC they will get a happy retirement.

The weather also hit us hard and we have had roofs blow off and all sorts of damage. Hopefully the worst of it is over (if we dare say that!) and we can't wait for the Spring and the sunshine.

Once again, thank you to everyone for their support. We appreciate it more than you can know.

It's the end of March and we are gearing up for Easter with our bunny raffle.

We have had so many surrender requests recently and it's been heartbreaking to hear from our friends at other rescues about how overwhelmed everyone is with the number of animals needing help.

Despite the tough situation we all find ourselves in there are lovely rays of positivity at Binky Buns.

Joey, the guinea, has found his forever home with lovely Penelope pig and his new family adore him. We have also waved off Buddy, the bunny who was abandoned in the shopping centre at Christmas, to a wonderful home. He is now adored and completely wanted.

Barbara, one of our elderbuns with cecal dysbiosis, has made an amazing comeback on treatment and Daryl, who has facial paralysis, has also shown signs of improvement. These are all little victories for the BB team.

We wish everyone a Happy Easter in a couple of weeks time and would like to say a big thank you again for your support.

April has been a wonderful month of fundraising with our Easter raffle and table tops raising about £600 for all our animals. Unfortunately most of the humans at Binky Buns caught covid but we still managed to keep all our residents in the manner to which they've become accustomed!!

This month Keith who came from a hoarding situation found love with Mavis and after a difficult bond is happily living in his new home. We've taken in some very underweight piggles and we are busy getting them fit and well so they too can find a new family.

We are trialling different diets with Beau, our interstitial cystitis piggy, and have found fresh grass seems to be a trigger in his condition. Steve has another skin infection which is needing daily treatment and everyone else is in such an epic moult that floof is continually flying round the rooms.

We can't wait to see what May brings for BB.

May has been a month of guinea pig arrivals and we are very pleased to have sent some of our piggies to happy and loving homes too.

We are inundated with rabbit surrender requests, some of whom were sadly only bought at Easter. We have never known the rabbit situation in the UK to be as bad as this and it is simply heartbreaking.

Our sanctuary residents continue to need a lot of care and dedication but we love each and every one of them. Most of them were turned down by multiple rescues as unrehomeable but we take joy in their joy and each day is a bonus.

Our jubilee auction has just finished and we raised over £300 thanks to everyone's generosity.

We are hopping off into June and hope to continue to help as many furries as possible.

June Update

Post by alicesadventures »

Hello everyone!

We are halfway through the year and we want to say a big thank you to all the Pledge a Pound supporters for your continued help.

We've had more new arrivals this month, including a neglect case where we lost one out of three piggies who came through our doors. Sadly little Pixie had been dropped head first by a child and the damage was too great to be repaired. It has been a heartbreaking tragedy for us and another reason that small animals should not be given as gifts to young children. Clover and Cowslip, who came from the same household, were understandably timid but last week we happily waved them off to their new start in a new home.

Cyril piggy has also arrived. He was supposed to be a 6 week baby so when he arrived we were surprised to see he was over 1kg! Luckily we never believe anything we're told and just roll with whoever comes our way.

Jilly, one of our sanctuary bunnies, has had her booster. She is blind and now has a little bit of trouble with her front teeth but we will monitor the situation carefully. We also had to say goodbye to Barbara yesterday - Barbara was an old bun and unfortunately her pain levels could no longer be controlled. We will miss her very much.

Heading into July we are celebrating Rabbit Awareness Week and are promoting 'Room for Rabbits'. In our opinion, bunnies can never have enough space so this is a great theme for us to get behind.

See you all next month!

July Update

Post by alicesadventures »

The summer has continued with lots and lots of surrender requests and we are helping as many animals we can as space and finances allow. When we don't have room to take in bunnies we are offering help with neutering and vaccinations if at all possible.

Piggy Cyril has been neutered which means he will be able to look for a friend in a few weeks. We have also used the donation given to us by the lovely people at Pledge a Pound to pay for the emergency spay of piggy Orli this week. Her abdomen got quite swollen very quickly and scans revealed bilateral ovarian cysts. We are now taking all our girls for checks as this really is more common than people realise and potentially dangerous to female guineas.

We have started doing the carboot rounds for fundraising and are hoping the sunshine continues into the summer so we can keep going.

We wish you all a wonderful Summer full of binkies and popcorns.

At Binky Buns we are reluctantly waving goodbye to the summer.

August has been a busy month for us. Our female piggies all went for ultrasounds to check for ovarian cysts. Olive, an elderpig, was found to have a large cyst. It was felt to be too risky to put her under general anaesthetic for a spay so our vet drained it while Olive was conscious in an ultrasound guided procedure. 14ml of fluid was removed and she has been a much happier guinea pig since.

We were also contacted about a situation where guinea pigs were breeding out of control so we combined with another rescue so that all the animals could be removed. Daisy and her babies have all been welcomed into the Binky Buns gang. Daisy is a very nervous girl and has a microeye which has been blinded from trauma. We are keeping her on pregnancy watch and keeping our paws crossed that she hasn't got to go through another birth.

This month we have been out and about fundraising whenever we can. Our stall at the Hoppings on Bank Holiday went really well and we are thrilled with the £200 raised.

Thank you to you all for your continued support.

Autumn is hitting Binky Buns. The humans are starting to feel the shorter days but the bunnies are so busy sampling the leaves that are falling off the trees that they don't seem to have noticed!

We've had some guinea pigs going out to lovely homes and thankfully the ones who were on pregnancy watch have all come through without a pup in sight! Our autumn auction was also a fundraising hit which was brilliant.

As we are full to the rafters we have been trying to help bunnies in other ways. We managed to find a rescue foster placement for a poor Dutch rabbit who had been abandoned in a bush with an ulcerated eye. We're also seeing if we can seeing if we can help with a bit of bonding for those who are struggling.

Our resident sanctuary rabbits are all still going strong. Teacup is having regular dental assessments now and Steve has gone to a specialist vet to have an eye lesion assessed. He is also having skin and ear treatments.

We are dreading the run-up to Bonfire Night and are making plan to get all animals safely inside and as quiet as possible.

As always thank you to everyone for their kindness to us.

It's the end of November and the weather has finally started to feel a bit nippy. Our elderbuns have moved indoors to warmer accommodation and our inn is completely full (as usual!)

After laboratory tests and medication trials we took old boy Steve for ear syringing and exploratory investigation under GA. Very sadly the damage was found to be so severe that we felt we had to let him go during the procedure. We have all been devastated but are so thankful to all those who helped us raise funds to give him a chance.

On the rescue front two neglected piggies (now called Sherlock and Holmes) made their way to us and we have sent them to a loving retirement home.
We also were able to help a bereaved bunny called Ben find love with a gorgeous lop called Sasha. They are now living in bonded bliss in a home and it's been lovely to see their relationship develop.

Our Christmas raffle has just launched so if anyone is feeling lucky please head over to our facebook page for more details. Lots of lovely things are up for grabs

It may be 3 weeks away but we wish you all a Happy and Binky-filled Christmas!!
