Marias Animal Shelter February 2021 update

Post by MariasAnimalShelter »

Time is going so fast at the moment, it feels like a blur and it is hard to tell you exactly what happened last month. The weather has been pretty appalling. Our fields have been saturated with all the heavy rain we had. Luckily most of the charities guinea pigs have been adopted. Some of the remaining guineas have health problems and may need to stay with us. We are very lucky to know an amazing rodentologist, who, if room will take the pigs with ongoing health needs and care for them for the remainder of their lives. Adoptions have slowed down for us, even though we have a waiting list of rabbits needing to come in. Hopefully things will improve with the weather, having said that we then come into the worst time of year for bonding rabbits. Can I say a massive thank you to all that support Pledge a pound. It helps out so many fantastic rescues. :)

Last week we had some sad news as our 17 year old bunny Toffee, died at the shelter. Although it was half expected, it was still a bit of a shock but he had a good winter in the new room we had made for him.
Our one worry at the moment is that the wild rabbits on our site have myxomatosis. Yesterday 1 was caught and taken to be put to sleep at the vet's.
In the January period 13 entered the shelter with 8 being adopted.

Things have been hectic with us recently and also lots of surprise births. The owner had told us her 6 females were not pregnant but unfortunately a few weeks down the line we found one huge baby and the next morning 4 more. We are waiting for the other females to give birth.

34 came in last month and 7 adopted. As you can see from the numbers the phone has been non stop for people wanting to surrender their animals. Unfortunately we had to turn away a large number due not having the capacity to take more in.

Thank you for your update.
Sorry to hear you have had large number of bunnies in and births ,with fewer adoptions so far. Well done for the 7 adoptions.
Hopefully things will improve in the coming months. :)

Hi Everyone
It's been another hectic month with lots of calls regarding adoptions as well as incoming animals. Our medication round in the mornings is taking around 3 hours at present. We have so many poorly ones now. Lots of guineas with kidney and heart problems, who will have to be given medicine for life and Rabbits who are with us for palliative care. We have had our first megacolon bunny and are still getting to grips with how to treat him.
This month 20 animals have come in and 15 adopted. :)

Thank goodness we had a few weeks of rain. The grass has started to grow in our fields. We have picked lots of buckets of grass for the animals and our outside pens have now been replenished. Lots of boarders booked for the next few months, which will help a little financially. We have a waiting list for rabbit to come in but we are now full so have to wait until we get some more rabbits adopted before any more can come in.
This month 11 in and 10 out. :)

Its been a hard month with the calls. People just wanting to give up their animals for silly reasons. Adoptions have really slowed down as well. 38 came in and only 6 adopted. Hopefully next month will be better. :)

This month was quite emotional as we lost our 2 permanent residents Rupert and Logan. They were always running around underfoot trying to get food or attention from us and I will miss the antics they use to get up to.
As always we have been dealing with poorly animals, who not only take up our time but have a significant financial impact on us as well.
This month we saw 18 come in and 15 found new homes. :)
