Camp Nibble updates 2020

JANUARY UPDATE:

Thank you so much for our christmas donation and wonderful christmas parcel :D

Image

We've been busy since the new year with several new arrivals joining us. Lots of vet trips as always, I'm just making a list of our special needs bunnies who most need to see our lovely bunny vet tomorrow morning. I think she's expecting 4 or 5, but I'm sure 7 will be fine gulp!..if they share the same carrier it can count as one bunny right? :-$ Our sweet Mr Bean bunny is staying in overnight after a lateral wall resection in an attempt to help a really horrible (and very smelly!) ear issue. We've been so worried as its a big op for him, but we've at least had the call to say that he's come through the op and looks to be recovering ok.

I'm enjoying bonding Banana (middle bunny) with two lovely new friends for one of our trusted approved homes. They are doing so well together so far so we've everything crossed that he'll be hopping off to his lovely new home with them at the weekend.

Our sanctuary bunny of the month for January is Star Lord:

This very sweet ruby-eyed lionhead was handed into a vet practice as a stray. We suspect that he may have become unwanted after developing a very severe head tilt. Having been unclaimed after 7 days with no-one there able to offer him a home he was facing euthanasia. Therefore, arrangements were made for him to join us so that he could have the chance of receiving treatment.

Starlord's prognosis was very uncertain when he first arrived. However, having been with us now a few months he has settled in very well. He seems much happier in himself, and a lot more stable (despite still being very wonky!) He is currently managing well, and is able to perform happy normal rabbit behaviours. He is a very sociable little guy and has bonded brilliantly with his sanctuary friends (with their own e.cuniculi related issues).

Thank you for your update and the super pics :) Love that you call Starlord ruby-eyed rather than red-eyed :) and hope that his wonkiness might improve with treatment. It's nice that he is with others suffering from the same condition. Hope Mr Bean makes a speedy recovery from his op and that Banana and his pals settle in their new home. :)

Febuary update:

It was a lovely surprise to be chosen as one of the January Pledge a Pound winners, thank you all so much :ymhug:

Mr Bean bunny who we were worried about last month has done so well recovering from his lateral wall resection. It was a big operation for him, but we're really pleased we went ahead as it does seem to have really helped to get his ear infection more managable. In the photo below he still has horrible scabby stitches which look very gruseme, but these have all been removed now. He's very happy and well in himself but his previously completely lop ear now sticks upright on top of his head bless him...let's just hope he doesn't pass a mirror and get a shock ;)

Image

We've a very handsome new arrival called YouTube. He was helped by a rescuer who came across him being advertised as unwanted and in need of urgent vet care. He sadly has a newly aquired head tilt which has worryingly become worse in the short time he's been with us, despite him now receiving treatment. He's a lovely sweet chap and we so hope that his condition will stabilise. He's currently managing to eat/drink and take care of himself absolutely fine with no rolling. However, its distressing to see him walking around in a circle whilst getting used to his new wonky world. please do keep your fingers crossed for him:

March Update:

I've been struggling a little to write an update this month as these are anxious times. We will only at best have very limited vet care available for our rescue animals for the timebeing, with everything that is going on in the world. This is a very vulnerable position for us with so many special needs animals in our care.

For the timebeing I'd like to share our Camp Nibble colouring page which has very kindly been designed for us, featuring our special bunnies past and present. It could be a relaxing activity to do whilst stuck at home. You can download it here: https://sites.create-cdn.net/sitefiles/ ... _sheet.pdf

Our sanctuary bunny of the month for March is the very sweet Peppa Pig:

Peppa Pig is a sweet natured cross breed born in 2014, she joined us at 5 years old in need of rescue support. She has snuffles and a severe head tilt which affects her balance. Despite this she is currently managing well and still enjoying life.
Sadly, Peppa's sister who she was closely bonded to passed away shortly before she joined us. Therefore, we have been very grateful to be able to get her safely through her neutering operation, and see her happily settled with a new friend.

We hope that all of the rescues and bunny owners out there are coping ok during these strange times in 'lock down'. We are not doing any rabbit adoptions just at the moment whilst the social distancing rules are so strict. We are currently full so have been prioritising doing what we can to ensure that all of the animals with us are as happy and well as they can be here with us, or in wonderful foster homes. A majority of our rabbits are special needs long term residents anyway. However, we do currently also have a few healthy bunnies stuck with us now sadly until we feel comfortable re-homing again.

I'm sad to say that Banana who we featured in our January update was returned to us very unexpectedly after 3 months after he began fighting out of the blue with his companion (spring fever!?) Its very sad as the home was perfect for him, and the bond had gone brilliantly up until then. He's with a lovely fosterer for the time being and it will hopefully be second time lucky in finding a forever home for him before too long.

We're having to take it day by day and try not to get overwhelmed with worry, with limited vet care available and so many vulnerable animals with health issues. Our vets have been really supportive so far and we've managed to keep up to date with vaccines, and have been able to get the essential medicines we've needed via email/phone consultations to keep everybun ticking over. We were relieved to be able to get 3 bunnies admitted for urgent operations as emergency cases who are all doing well. Its a worry though not being to take the chronically unwell bunnies in for their regular routine check ups. We know how well some of our dental bunnies can hide needing treatment!

Our sanctuary bunny of the month for April is YouTube (featured in our Feb update):

Youtube was rescued by a wonderful rescue group who saw him being advertised as unwanted, and in need of vet care after developing a head tilt. He is a gorgeous friendly chap who has now received initial vet care and is managing well. He is very wonky, but is stable and well at the moment.

Unfortunately, we are unable to have him neutered for the time being with vets currently unable to perform routine none-emergency procedures. We look forwards to getting him settled with a friend/s when we are able to. However, in the meantime we are delighted that he is being very spoilt with a special VIP fosterer Opera singer Wallis Giunta http://wallisgiunta.com/

Wallis has taken brilliant care of our Camp Nibblers in the past and is a very experienced dedicated bunny foster mum (whenever she finds herself in one place for long enough) Having fostered bunnies for rescues in different countries, she has taken care of headtilt hoppers like YouTube before.

May update:

We are looking forwards to waving Banana bunny off for the second time tomorrow. He sadly needed to come back to us after his original bond broke down. He's had a very successful bunnymoon here this week with a former Camp Nibbler. Its another wonderful trusted home, so we're just keeping everything crossed that he behaves himself this time around!

We very sadly lost our wonderfully grumpy Happy on Monday evening, just shy of his 11th birthday. Having joined us at 7 years old Happy was one of our current longest term residents.
This old boy was so full of character, and a very fiesty fellow!
Luckily, he could live happily with his rabbit friends once very carefully bonded. Therefore, we didn't need to worry about him being lonely.

"We are really missing enjoying seeing you lazing around the place, with that glare in your eye old man...I will remember you with great love everytime I see the scar from that bite you took out of my shin ha! Rest now gorgeous grump Xxx"

Our sanctuary bunny of the month for May is the gorgeous Godzilla:

Godzilla is a Netherland dwarf who was handed into a vets as a stray. No-one at the vet practice was in a position to offer him a home, but they were very sad at the prospect of needing to put such a sweet little chap to sleep if a rescue space for him couldn't be found.

Godzilla joined us with huge overgrown front teeth, and sadly also has extensive general dental disease. He was very much in need of vet treatment when he arrived, and needed to be booked in for an urgent dental. We suspect he may have been abandoned by his owners due to his health issues.

Godzilla is currently needing his troublesome incisors trimming regularly. However, he will hopefully be able to have these successfully removed once normal vet service can safely be resumed. He will need on-going dental treatment for his back teeth issues. Sadly, Netherland Dwarf rabbits can be predisposed to developing health issues due to their un-natural small flat face shape.

Our main focus this month has been on balancing keeping our many special needs bunnies with complex health issues as happy and well as possible whilst our vets are still only able to offer a limited service. There is always somebun or other not doing so well for us to worry about. However, its been a relief that we've managed to somehow make it work out ok for everyone. We have managed to keep stocked up with all of the medications we've needed, and have managed to get anyone any vet help when they've needed it. Its all just taking a lot more planning than usual. We've been able to keep eveyone up to date with their vaccinations, but we've still a couple of neuters and a couple of more complex surgeries that are needing to wait until the vets are in a better position to deal with them.

This time of year when we have some beautiful hot days I become so anxious about fly strike. We have many rabbits who are so much more at risk than a healthy bunny usually would be. Several of our bunnies need a little help with keeping their bums clean, and some live with chronic infection...all things which those pesky flies are just so attracted too. Not good for the nerves at all!...'Keep calm, and keep checking'. I guess that's my current mantra ha!

Our Sanctuary bunny of the month for June is Owen:

Celebrating his 10th birthday this month its only fair that gorgeous Owen is our sanctuary bunny of the month. Happy Birthday Owen!!

Owen is an extremely sweet older bunny born in 2010.
This old chap was so unsure of everything when he first joined us. It was very special to see him begin to come out of his shell, and begin to enjoy playing with his toys, and get used to having space to play.

Having managed to get him safely through neutering it has been an absolute joy to have successfully bonded Owen with a gentle group of our older special needs bunnies. He's visably delighted to have such lovely friends to enjoy his retirement with. Owen unfortunately has dental issues and will retire here with us as one of our sanctuary bunnies receiving all the love and care he needs.
