What advice for prospective new guinea pig owners?

Post by sdf76 »

If anyone is interested in having guinea pigs as pets, we have many in the Guinea pigs in Need section needing new homes.
I was interested in this information by our member Sherlock earlier this year.....

Guinea pigs are very sensitive to cold, damp and heat, as guinea pigs don't have the underfur that other animals like rabbits, cats and dogs do; plus they also have a low centre of gravity so their tummy's are close to the ground (and hence the cold/damp area). For this reason guinea pigs shouldn't be in temperatures below 10 degrees. Therefore there are 3 accommodation options: this poster (http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/ ... 0ffefa.jpg) has a good summary of them.

Just bumping this info up as I know there are many guinea pigs available for re-homing in several of the Pledge a Pound rescues.
